London’s engineers inspire next generation
17 October 2008: Over 150 sixth form students from across London took part in Engineering Your Future (EYF) today at the historic Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) headquarters in Westminster. Now in its eighth year, EYF is a one day event that aims to provide students and teachers with a unique experience and a better understanding of the opportunities a career in engineering can offer.
Supported by London based companies Mott MacDonald, Lotus Cars, BP Shipping and Bovis Lend Lease, four interactive sessions were hosted by young professional engineers from different engineering disciplines. A careers session followed, offering a valuable opportunity for students and teachers to seek advice from new graduates, Universities and student placement experts Year In Industry, on issues ranging from the various routes into engineering to finding financial support for studies.
ICE London Region Director, Jacki Bell, said:
“A career in engineering is an important and rewarding one, especially in
London, and the Engineering Your Future events have inspired many of London’s most talented young people to make a difference in the world through becoming an engineer.
“The Institutions remain committed to ensuring that the best students are attracted into these essential professions, especially following Mayor Johnson’s statement this week (The Telegraph, 14 Oct) highlighting the importance of developing infrastructure to ensure future prosperity.
“I congratulate all the participating organisations, London companies and London universities for delivering such a successful event today and giving more young people the opportunity to consider the exciting realities of joining this vibrant industry.”
EYF is the only careers event of its kind to have the backing of the UK’s leading engineering groups and institutions. It is organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in conjunction with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET), the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the government backed STEMNET.
This is the fourth such event to be held in London this year and follows the extremely successful series held during National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) in March at Rosedale College in Uxbridge, and at IMarEST and IMechE.
